FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2025 - RACE UPDATE

Hello Breckebeiner, winter triathlon and duathlon, and Nordic skiing fans!

We’re ONE WEEK AWAY(!) from hosting you at the Gold Run Nordic Center. Despite warm temps, the course is in great shape. This week promises more snow, followed by a sunny event weekend.

We’ve got a few short updates to pass along. Thanks as always for taking a look. See you at the Gold Run Nordic Center next weekend!

EVENT UPDATE WEBPAGE
We’re in the process of building this today. You’ll be able to find it on the main navigation of the Breckebeiner.com website. Sometimes email and text aren’t as thorough as we’d like them to be. This is a way for all of you to have up-to-the-minute race updates. Or reasonably so at least. It’s not like I’m chipped. Look here for important athlete and race updates from now throughout race weekend.

STAGGERED START TIMES
Last year we opted to start Sprint and Intermediate races together. The sun was beating on the course and the run and bike legs were beginning to degrade. It made sense to get everyone on the course as quickly as possible This year we’re going with a hybrid solution. We’re going to start the Intermediate fields first on both days, then start the Sprint fields 5 minutes later. These changes are reflected in the online schedule.

START LISTS
TriReg.com does a very good job, but they only provide the basics when you try to see who’s in your field. Look for a publicly accessible Google doc on Monday that details who’s registered in every event. We’ll place those links in the FAQ section of the website and on each event info page.

ON SITE REG?
As they say in the great state of Wisconsin, “You betcha.”
Everybody throw up the dubba-ya.

Athletes can register (or change categories) up to 15 minutes prior to each race’s start.

We’ve all seen timers lose their minds over stuff like that at other events. Not us. Not our timers. Cool as the other side of the pillow.

MERCHANDISE
Hoo booy. It’s starting to hit the back dock (which is also known as the front porch). I’m a crafter at heart. You gotta keep your head on a swivel around our house. ‘Cuz I got an itchy bedazzling finger!

Every rider gets $25 in Breckebeiner bucks (in addition to a $10 meal coupon). Spend those Breckie Bux at the on-site store. Use ‘em on pre-printed stuff, or design your own and we’ll print it up for you while you wait. We’ve placed a few apparel images below. You can take a look at the full collection HERE.

MINI-BEINER NORDIC
The Breckebeiner Nordic course is a monster. Some of you animals are doing two or even three loops of it. If you’re more a a hot-chocolate-with-friends skier, think about jumping into the 9K Mini-Beiner instead. It’s fun, it’s fast and it’s cheap. And just like every other event this weekend, every entry comes with $25-worth or BreckieBux and a %10 meal coupon. Come tour the Gold Run Nordic Center!

These will be held at the Gold Run Nordic Center clubhouse. There will also be a virtual option via Zoom.

AID STATIONS
We’ll have one main aid station in the transition area. We’re eliminating the station at the Gold Run Trailhead which only affects the Nordic event. It was very lightly used so we’re scuttling it. We’ll also place a table at the lap/continue point of all three DU and TRI legs. You are invited to stage your own water and feeds here. This is a slight departure from what you’ll see at worlds, which gives the USAT folks (who are profoundly patient and understanding) a mild case of the yips. But even tho this event is small, its athletes still have real needs. This is a compromise that acknowledges that fact. I’ll take the blame for this one.

DEFERRALS
We’ve received a few notes from folks who can’t make it this year due to injury or unforeseen circumstances. We’ll absolutely defer you to 2026 at no cost. Please just fill out this short form: BRECKEBEINER ATHLETE

TEDX BRECKENRIDGE – METAMORPHOSIS
Breck is a community full of cool events. Just like Madge the manicurist said in the Palmolive ads, “Honey, you’re soaking in one right now!”

Or something like that. My point is that there’s lots of other stuff going on. One of the neatest things tho is the Metamorphosis event produced by the team at TedX Breckenridge. You can find out more about it HERE. If it gets your gears turning and you’d like to attend, enter BRECKEPIC when purchasing a ticket to receive 15% off of your entry.

CATEGORIES
Wow. Lot’s of ‘em. These are best communicated graphically instead of type-quite-a-lot-of-words-i-ly (you know what I mean). If you want a closer look, click here for a full list of triathlon categories or here for duathlon categories

Nordic Endurance categories are quite a bit simpler. We’re dividing these into broader men’s and women’s age categories this weekend and will update the site accordingly.
  • 15K Men & Women: 17 & Under, Classic, Skate, Para, Clyde, Athena
  • 30K Men & Women (skate only): 17 & Under, 18+, Para, Clyde, Athena
  • 45K Men & Women (skate only): 17 & Under, 18+, Para, Clyde, Athena

WORLD’S QUALIFYING
ALL finishers of Breckebeiner’s duathlon and triathlon events in pre-designated categories automatically qualify for 2026 Worlds. Those that don’t fall so neatly into those categories can talk with USAT about it. They may be able to find a spot for you. For more detailed info, click HERE, or email teamusa@usatriathlon.org.

2025 World’s takes place in Cogne, Italy on February 21+23, 2025. The date and location of 2026 hasn’t been announced yet. We’re interested, and we can definitely promise snow, but we want to take a look at the bid doc and also gauge the community’s interest in hosting. Stay tuned!

ELITE FIELDS
Elite athletes race with their appropriate age groups. USAT will sort out the elite team being sent to worlds. Pretty easy. Also, they’re great about stuff like this. Talk to them on site – they’re happy to answer your questions!

BOREALIS DEMOS – SOLD OUT
Not to fret tho, the Nordic Center still has units available. Click here to reserve yours: Gold Run Nordic Center Bike & Ski Rental Fleet

WAXING ROOM
Do we have one? You bet we do. And it’s open to the public.

VOLUNTEERS
We’re in pretty good shape, but we could use just a few to help with awards. If someone in your crew wants to link arms with our merry band of pirates for a few hours on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, have them drop me a line. I’ll make it rain BreckieBux on ’em. EMAIL MIKEMAC
